Equine Sports Massage & Rehabilitation

I have always had a massive passion for animals, in particular horses and always planned to work within the equine therapy world. After doing a lot of research I made the decision to start my equine training and went on to qualify as a equine sports massage therapist (ESMT) with Equissage Europe. I believe that my human training will compliment the rehabilitation of our equine friends as the basic principles remain the same between human and equine; if we move in the best way possible, focus on quality of movement and control, we will better our bodies. Equine Massage is a brilliant way to keep our horses in peak condition and to monitor their condition and wellbeing.

What is Equine Massage Therapy?

Equine Sports Massage Therapy (ESMT) is the therapeutic application of hands-on massage techniques for the purpose of increasing circulation, relaxing muscle spasms, relieving tension, enhancing muscle tone, and increasing range of motion. It is beneficial for all horses, whatever level of work they are in. Massage is a great way of monitoring your horses wellbeing throughout the year and helps to prevent injury. It follows similar principles to human sports massage because, like people, animals can suffer from muscular pain and discomfort which can inhibit the way they move causing them to use their body incorrectly to compensate which can create ridden problem.

Benefits of Massage

  • Enhances muscle tone

  • Increases range of movement

  • Reduces inflammation and swelling in the joints, thereby relieving pain

  • Assists on body balance as treating the body as a whole

  • Promotes healing by increasing the flow of nutrients to the muscles, and carrying away excessive fluids and toxins in the lymph and circulatory system

  • Creates a positive effect on the contractual and release process of the muscles. When tension is released, muscles relax

  • Helps produce endorphins, natural pain killers

  • Helps maintain the whole body in better physical condition

The Initial Assessment

An initial assessment will include gathering information about your horses history, health, niggles and your goals as well as a basic gait & objective assessment. Your horse will then have their first massage to get them used to myself and the different techniques of massage.

Where appropriate I can also give you some rehab work that you can continue with.

I am insured with Balens (Zurich) and Registered with IAAMT.

In order for me to massage your horse it is essential that you gain Veterinary Consent Prior to me attending your yard.
